Orpheus Island Fine Art Photography Workshop 2011

Presented by Les Walkling & Darren Jew
28th August to 2nd September 2011

This is the seventh year Les has presented this workshop, which is a full five day all-inclusive unique experience designed for professional photographers. The James Cook University Orpheus Research Station is a first class teaching facility, and the tropical islands provide for amazing photographic opportunities. Les rates this workshop as the best workshop he delivers in Australia.

Les Walkling is one of the greatest educators the professional photographic industry has known. You will gain exceptional knowledge in Photoshop and Lightroom, colour management, fine art printing, and be inspired to create masterpieces for yourself and your clients. Les has a vast background in professional and university education and fine art photography with his work featured in major public galleries such as the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.                 http://www.leswalkling.com/

Darren Jew has photographed the planet’s landscapes and wildlife from Antarctica to Zambia over his 30-year career; on mountain peaks, desert plains and beneath the Ocean’s surface.  After his photography studies at the Queensland College of Art and work in darkrooms and commercial studios, Darren worked for 8 years in the photo unit of the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.  A certified SCUBA diver since age 14, his love for the ocean is expressed through his underwater images.  The last two decades have seen Darren chase his passion for capturing and sharing the natural World, producing sought-after nature, travel and scientific images, selling fine art prints, undertaking magazine commissions and leading photo tours to the World’s great wildlife, landscape and marine destinations.  Darren is the author of the book AUSTRALIA – reef, rainforest, red heart; he exhibits around Australia, and he is an Ambassador for the conservation organisation WWF.  Darren has been a member of the AIPP since 2007 and received his AIPP Master of Photography in 2010.  http://www.darrenjew.com

You will be on a tropical island fringed by coral reefs, giant clams and tropical fish, where you can photograph, snorkel, bushwalk, and beach-comb. There is also a stunning half-day boat trip to nearby Yank’s Jetty and Fantome Island.  Enjoy the marvelous menus created for us by our own internationally renowned chefs, and dine in the evening under the stars by the beach.

The workshop comprises lectures, demonstrations and presentations each morning, backed up with hands on work after lunch and into the evening. This year Les is supported by five very experienced tutors to ensure that the knowledge you are acquiring is immediately translated into real-world imaging skills and new ways of seeing. Our sponsors also attend the workshop and supply the ‘state-of-the-art’ equipment, knowledge and materials for your creative photography needs.

The Orpheus Island Research station http://www-public.jcu.edu.au/oirs/index.htm is limited to only 40 guests.  This workshop is very popular and will book out again this year.
