The PICA Photo Imaging Show in Brisbane this coming May will feature a whole new generation of imaging technology set to revolutionise the business of photography in Australia.
This involves everything from new digital printing processes for the photo store and the home user, plus a new challenge from digital video to the supremacy of still cameras. Huge advances in single frame video printing from a digital video camera are making practical the printing of individual frames. At the same time, new digital editing software for the PC is bringing wedding video production into the gamut of the professional photographer.
Altogether there will be over 100 major photo and digital companies showcasing the latest developments and trends in imaging technology. In addition to photographers and retailers, the show also attracts a considerable number of graphic artists, marketing mangers and people working in the pre-press industry.
The PICA show is just a part of the event known as Photo Imaging 2001. Coordinated by the Photo Imaging Council of Australia (PICA) The special week of activities is run in association with the Photo Marketing Association and the Australian Institute of Professional Photography.
The Photo Marketing Association is organising conferences for photo retailers, labs and camera repairers. The Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) is organising a one-day seminar on digital imaging.
For professional photographers, the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) there are two special sessions on making pro images sing with Adobe Photoshop. A special theatre on the exhibition floor will feature a working panel of judges determining the successful entries in the annual Australian Professional Photography Awards.
"The business of making images is undergoing extreme change," said Paul Curtis, Executive Director of PICA. "To survive you need to know just where we are heading with digital files, digital videos, digital printing and digital cameras."
"If you are serious about being in the imaging business, the time has come to extract the digit and come to this show. Just one good idea will repay your visit costs many times over," Curtis said.
Photo Imaging is held close to one of the world's greatest vacation centres. The warm city of Brisbane is linked by a fast road transport system that brings the fabulous miles of Gold Coast beaches to within less than an hour' s drive. At the centre of the busy Gold Coast is Surfers Paradise and one of Australia's most popular casinos. Tours to this and other vacation areas are being organised in conjunction with the show.
Although the equipment exhibition is primarily aimed at retailers and professional image-makers, keen imaging enthusiast are welcome and will be admitted free between 10.30am and 5.15pm on Sunday May 20.
