International Imaging Event for Sydney 2000

With the world focusing on Australia for Olympics 2000, Sydney is gearing up to host the Southern Hemisphere's largest-ever international photo and imaging show.

The event will be held in May 2000 and consist of major exhibitions of both imaging equipment and photography together with conferences for professional photographers, digital image-makers, photo retailers and amateur photographers.

Known as Photo Imaging 2000, the special week of activities is coordinated by the Photo Imaging Council of Australia (PICA). Over 100 major photo and digital companies in Australia, plus companies from overseas will showcase the latest developments and trends in imaging technology at the PICA Show May 5-7 at Sydney's famous Darling Harbour complex.

A special German Pavilion to highlight the latest products from Germany is being presented by the Association of German Precision Mechanics and Optical Industries.

The Photo Marketing Association International (PMAI) is organising conferences for photo retailers, labs and camera repairers. The Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) is organising a one-day seminar on digital imaging.

Professional photographers will have a number of activities. A special theatre near the exhibition floor will feature a working panel of judges determining the successful entries in the annual Australian Professional Photography Awards.

The Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP) is organising an international two-day conference for professional photographers. The Australian Commercial and Magazine Photographers of Australia (ACMP) will also be participating in the event.

The Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (RPS) will present a symposium of papers given by leading technologists and practitioners from the photographic industry worldwide. Attendees will gain insights into what we may expect in the coming Millennium, as well as charting photography's third century, artistically.

Papers are invited from members of the imaging industry, photographers, gallery owners and curators, scientists and developers. The convenor for the RPS in Australia is Tony Hilton, ARPS at e-mail hilton@f1.net.au.

PICA is also organising special lectures for photography consumers and exhibitions of both amateur and professional photography.

The Sydney Camera Market will be offering antique, second-hand and collectible photo equipment for sale 7th May, from 10am-3pm, at the Ultimo Community Centre, William Henry Street, diagonally opposite the

Powerhouse Museum..

" This event is unique," said Paul Curtis, the Executive Director of PICA. " No other exhibition in the world combines a major photo display and photo judging with an equipment display."

Although the equipment exhibition is primarily aimed at retailers and professional image-makers, keen imaging enthusiast are welcome and will be admitted free between 10.30am and 5.15pm on Sunday May 7.
